The Under Secretary of State,
Colonial Office,
S.W.1.
Sir,
HONG KONG
59
With further reference to your letter of the 17th instant 82765/31, we have advised the Crown Agents for the Colonies that Messrs. Madgwick, Wood and Jeffery will be available to sail as soon after the 1st March as their passages can be arranged, and Mr. A. R. Brumby at any time after the 1st May.
It will be necessary to arrange the date from which the Hong Kong Government are to assume responsi- bility for the remuneration of these officers and we would suggest that they be seconded as from the dates above mentioned, i.e. Messrs. Madgwick. Wood and Jeffery from 1st March and Mr. Brumby from 1st May .
We think it would simplify matters if during the period that these officers are lent to the Hong Kong Government they should continue to receive their salary and emoluments from this Company instead of being paid direct by the Government and if this arrangement is acceptable to the Hong Kong Government we will arrange for them to be paid by our Manager in Hong Kong, and that he should render a monthly account to the Govern- ment for the amount to be repaid by them.
We regret that in our letter of the 5th inst. there was a slight error in stating the scale of Messrs. Wood and Jeffery as follows " by annual increments of £10 to £372 then £390 by £20 to £450.
It should have been stated £254 £272 £372 then £390 by £20 to £450
-
£300 then by £ld to It will be noted.
that the only difference is that from £272 to £300 there is an increment of £28 instead of £18.
We are, Sir,
Your obedient Servants,
ent Servants,
